Robbie Whelan 6K Race 1 Results
Sam O’Sullivan wins Race 1 in the Robbie Whelan 6k Race Series
Race 1 in the Robbie Whelan 6K Race series took place tonight in ideal running conditions. We had a brilliant turnout with 139 participants. Robbie’s son, Killian, and brother Paul took to the field with Robbie’s family supporting along the route. We are grateful for the Whelan family support of this series and we hope it will be a fitting tribute to him. Many people over the past week indicated they were running in Robbie’s memory.
Clonmel AC and Clonmel Swimming Clubs were two clubs close to Robbie’s heart so it was very fitting that Clonmel AC athlete, Sam O’ Sullivan, running for Team “Clonmel Swimming Club” took a very impressive race win. Robbie was a great promoter of juvenile athletics and so it was great to see the younger generation coming through and leading the field.
The top 3 men were Sam O’Sullivan, Nigel O’Flaherty and Cormac Healy.
The top 3 women were Angela McCann, Elaine Horgan and Suzanne Shine.
We had some very accurate predictions with Kevin Tobin of the “Point to Pointers” leading the way when running within 1 second of his prediction and a further 10 people within 8 seconds.
We had two teams who did not manage to field three runners and as such their entry to the team competition is marked as incomplete. While these teams will not be eligible for the overall division prize they will still be eligible for the team prize based on best team performance on an individual race night so plenty of incentive to get a full team out for next week.
